5 Minute Besan Bread Recipe

A quick and tasty breakfast made by coating bread slices with a thick vegetable besan mixture, sesame seeds and Indian spices, then cooking them on a pan until golden and lightly crisp.

Ingredients
  

  • 1 cup besan gram flour
  • 2 tbsp finely chopped capsicum
  • 3 tbsp finely chopped carrot
  • 2 tbsp finely chopped tomato
  • 2 tbsp finely chopped onion
  • 1 green chilli finely chopped
  • 1 handful chopped fresh coriander
  • ¼ tsp turmeric powder
  • ½ tsp red chilli powder
  • 1 tsp coriander powder
  • 1 tsp pav bhaji masala
  • Salt to taste
  • Water as needed for a thick mixture
  • 2 pinches baking soda
  • Lemon juice as needed
  • 6 bread slices
  • Sesame seeds as needed
  • 1 tsp oil for cooking plus a little extra for flipping

Method

  1. Sieve the besan into a mixing bowl.
  2. Add all the chopped vegetables, coriander, spices and salt.
  3. Add water gradually and mix to make a thick, spreadable mixture.
  4. Add baking soda and lemon juice and mix gently.
  5. Spread the mixture evenly over one side of each bread slice.
  6. Sprinkle sesame seeds over the mixture.
  7. Heat a pan and add 1 teaspoon oil.
  8. Place the bread with the coated side facing down.
  9. Spread besan mixture over the other side and sprinkle sesame seeds.
  10. Cover and cook for about 5 minutes.
  11. Add a little oil, flip and cook for another 2–3 minutes.
  12. Turn the bread onto its sides briefly so the edges cook properly.
  13. Cut into two pieces and serve hot.
