About This Recipe
This instant wheat flour vegetable chilla is my kind of recipe for busy mornings when there isn’t much time to prepare breakfast. Everything is mixed together in a single bowl, including finely grated potato and chopped vegetables, and then cooked directly on a hot tawa.
The batter is kept slightly thick so that the chilla can be spread easily without becoming too thin. As it cooks, the vegetables soften and the edges become lightly golden while the grated potato helps keep the centre tender.
The combination of tomato, capsicum, onion, carrot, coriander and Indian spices gives every bite plenty of flavour. You can make the chillas medium sized, which makes them especially convenient for packing into a lunchbox.

Key Ingredients
Wheat Flour
Whole wheat flour forms the base of this instant chilla. It gives the recipe structure and makes it more filling than a simple vegetable pancake.
Grated Potato
Finely grated potato is one of the useful ingredients in this recipe. It blends into the batter and helps give the cooked chilla a softer texture. Grate the potato finely rather than leaving large pieces.
Mixed Vegetables
Carrot, capsicum, onion and tomato add colour, texture and natural flavour. Chopping them finely is important because the chilla cooks relatively quickly.
Indian Spices
Black pepper, turmeric, red chilli powder and garam masala give the batter a warm, savoury flavour. Maggi masala adds an extra familiar savoury taste.

How to make Wheat Flour Vegetable Chilla with Step-by-step Photos
1. Take 2 cups of wheat flour in a large mixing bowl.
2. Add 3 tablespoons chopped capsicum, 3 tablespoons chopped carrot, 2 tablespoons chopped onion, 2 tablespoons chopped tomato, 2 green chillies and some chopped coriander leaves.
3. Now add ½ teaspoon black pepper, ¼ teaspoon turmeric powder, ½ teaspoon red chilli powder, ½ teaspoon garam masala, 1 teaspoon Maggi masala and salt to taste.
4. Mix everything together well before adding water. This helps distribute the vegetables and spices evenly through the flour.
5. Now add 1 finely grated potato to the mixture and mix again.
6. Start by adding 1 cup of water and mix well.
7. Check the consistency before adding more water. I added ¼ cup water more.
8. Heat a tawa (I used a non stick tawa for this recipe. The product link below is an affiliate link, and I may earn a small commission at no extra cost to you) over medium heat and lightly grease it with oil.
9. Pour one ladleful of batter onto the hot tawa. Gently spread it into a medium-sized round chilla.
10. Cover the tawa and cook for 2–3 minutes.
11. After about 3 minutes, check the top. Once the upper surface looks dry and the chilla has set, carefully flip it.
12. Cook the other side for approximately 2 minutes, or until cooked through and lightly golden.
13. Your Instant Wheat Flour Vegetable Chilla is ready to serve hot.
Expert Tips
1. Chop all the vegetables finely so they cook properly within the cooking time.
2. Grate the potato finely rather than coarsely.
3. Add water gradually. The batter should be thick and pourable, not watery.
4. Allow the tawa to heat properly before adding the batter.
5. Don’t spread the chilla too thin; a medium thickness keeps it softer.
6. If the chilla sticks, the tawa may not be properly heated or lightly greased.
7. Avoid cooking on extremely high heat because the outside can brown before the inside cooks.
8. For lunchboxes, allow the chillas to cool slightly before packing to prevent excess steam from making them soggy.
Variations & Substitutions
Less spicy: Reduce the green chilli and red chilli powder.
More vegetables: You can increase the quantity of the vegetables already used in the recipe.
No Maggi masala: It can be omitted if preferred; the other spices will still provide flavour.
Different flavour: Add a little extra coriander or black pepper for a more pronounced savoury taste.
Lunchbox version: Make smaller, medium-sized chillas that are easier for children to handle.
Serving Suggestions
Serve these wheat flour vegetable chillas warm with green chutney, tomato chutney, coriander chutney or plain curd.
For breakfast, you can pair them with a bowl of curd and some fresh fruit. For a kids’ tiffin, cut the chilla into smaller pieces or triangles so it is easy to eat.
They are also useful when you want a quick evening snack without preparing an elaborate recipe.
